Not only the beer tents at Theresienwiese, but also the city centre is overcrowded during Oktoberfest. So where to got to if you want to enjoy a fresh beer or a typical Bavarian dish in Munich without having to fight for a seat?
If you realize that Oktoberfest is too crowded for you taste, the Wirtshaus am Bavariapark* might be an alternative. Lying directly above Theresienwiese, opposite the Verkehrsmuseum (Museum of Transportation), you can drink an Augustiner-Maß underneath shadowy chestnut trees. In the evenings, you can sit inside.
The Augustiner Bräustuben*, also within easy walking distance from the Theresienwiese might be another option. The brewery tavern is situated in the Landsberger Straße (right next to the Augustiner production site) and seems to be a great place to experience what living in Bavaria is like.
If you prefer some less crowded options off the beaten track, you should experiment the alternatives north of the Isar river, e.g. the Hofbräukeller* at the Wiener Platz. Situated in a nice building from 1892 it offers not only great food and drinks, but also a separate playing zone (more than 100qm) for kids. We recommend the „Hofbräukeller Bratenpfandl“ (a selection of different kinds of meat and dumplings) – if you are not too hungry, it should be enough for 2 persons.
Or you could give the Paulaner am Nockherberg* a chance. The Paulaner monks started serving beer here in 1861. A quite traditional place – even though the brewery tavern had to be rebuilt twice in the meanwhile because of war damages and a fire. The beer garden is considered to be one of the nicest in Munich.
If the weather is nice another beer garden is worth to try: the Minihofbräuhaus* in the northern part of the Englischer Garten. Apart from the name and the beer, the small and calm place does not have too much in common with its more famous brother in the city centre. To compensate the lack of tourists, usually some more of our four-legged friends can be found there – the Minihofbräuhaus is one of the dog friendliest places in Munich.
Of course, this can only be a small selection of nice places to discover in Munich. Feel free to also try out others – and tell us about it afterwards!
